The legal aspect:

If you don't know this yet, the most important thing to understand is that the Mining Sector is regulated by the Mine Health and Safety Act, and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is responsible for matters related thereto.

Ok, so what do I have to do?

Have you established what your risk profile looks like:

  • The first step is for a competent person to conduct risk assessments with an aim to identify the safety, health and environmental hazards that is present in the working environment;
  • From here, a Risk Management System that consists of a Safety Management System, Occupational Hygiene Monitoring System, Environmental Management System as well as a Ventilation Management System is developed and implemented based on the outcome of the risk assessments;
  • These risk assessments are reviewed at least every two years to evaluate whether they are still representative of the current conditions;
  • The risk assessments are also reviewed if there have been any changes in the system(s), procedures, operations or any incidents or accidents occurred since the initial risk assessments were conducted.
